About the Instructor

Joan Bleyer Lazarus has been practicing art for over fifty years, learning through the atelier approach by seeking out artists who could provide specific knowledge and skills.

She first studied with Frank Zizzo, who was trained by Frank Reilly and taught his methods of portrait and figure painting. She then learned watercolor and color theory from Mariam Dougenous. Later, minimalist artist Robert Yasuda at Long Island C.W. Post helped her develop as a conceptual artist by identifying her artistic voice and contextualizing her work within art history.

Joan supplemented her training with art classes at Adelphi (where she majored in English), the Art League of Long Island (formerly Huntington Township Art League), and various workshops. Throughout her five-decade career, she has exhibited widely, recently curating and participating in group shows with the Eclectic Collective.

Her artistic practice spans both realism and conceptualism, working in diverse media including oil, acrylic, pencil, watercolor, collage, and assemblage. For over thirty years, she has taught in community settings, including the Lynbrook Recreation Department, the Department of Senior Enrichment for the Town of Hempstead, and Lynbrook Adult Education.
